FC Barcelona Faces Bayer Leverkusen in Champions League 2012

Last year FC Barcelona won the Champions League for the fourth time in its history and the third time since 2006. The Catalan club first won the trophy at London's famous Wembley Stadium in 1992 when the so-called "Dream Team" assembled by Johann Cruyff beat Italians Sampdoria 1-0.
The goal was scored from a free kick by Ronald Koeman in extra time and in the squad was one Pep Guardiola, now the coach who has created his own dream team based on the "total football" introduced by Cruyff.
Barcelona's second Champions League title was won against Arsenal in 2006 when Frank Rijkaard was coach; but it is Guardiola who has really built on the work of Rijkaard and won the title in 2009 and 2011, both times against Manchester United.
While Manchester United are already out of the 2012 competition after not progressing beyond the group stages, Barcelona will face Bayer Leverkusen in the next round; in the group stage they played Milan who they drew against in September at home and went on to beat 3-2 in the return match in Italy. You can buy tickets for FC Barcelona versus Bayer Leverkusen online from Simply Barcelona Tickets.
They also played Bate Borisov who put up little resistance against the might of Barcelona, who beat them 5-0 away and 4-0 at home; and Viktoria Plzen, who Barcelona first beat 2-0 at home and then 4-0 away. The results left them at the top of their group, with Milan in second place and both teams go through.
This year Barcelona's main rival so far is Real Madrid, who they have a longstanding and extremely bitter rivalry. The arrival of Jose Mourinho at Madrid has ensured that the rivalry has been really turned up, but so far Barcelona has usually come out winning. Last year Madrid lost to Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, who beat them 3-1 on aggregate.
And this year Mourinho has set his mind on beating Barcelona whenever he can. If they face each other in the Champions League he will need to overcome a massively talented rival whose home-grown talent is usually too much for his own team. Only time will tell.
In the next round against Bayer Leverkusen is to be played in February and March. The first leg is in Germany on Valentine's Day, while the return is on March 7th. Meanwhile Real Madrid will play CSKA Moskow from Russia.

Barcelona's Second Loss of the 2011-2012 Season Against Osasuna

Barcelona put themselves out of a serious chance of contending for the 2012 Spanish League title after a 3-2 loss against Osasuna. Barcelona eliminated Osasuna from the Copa del Rey in January with a comfortable 4-0 win at the Nou Camp followed by a less comfortable 2-1 away win and they are mid way down the league table at the moment.
The loss was only their second of the season, but with a number of draws to their name Real Madrid was able to open up their lead in the league table to 10 points. While publicly the team didn't admit to giving up, the reality of the situation meant that no real chance remained; it would take several Real Madrid players to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Real Madrid showed a impressive run throughout the 2011/2012 season, and by February had won all of their matches except three; two defeats and a draw. While Barcelona played well through much of the season to this point, they were also much less consistent and despite dominating possession in the majority of matches, were sometimes unable to score when they needed to.
The match against Osasuna coincided with freezing conditions throughout Spain in early to mid February and the pitch was one of the reasons Carles Puyol said the players found it hard to play as it was frozen solid. Barcelona just didn't seem able to control the ball as they normally do and Osasuna, looking much more comfortable in the cold, were able to win the ball from the visitors again and again.
And the result was that the hosts went two goals up thanks to Lekic in the fourth and then the twenty-first minute. While Alexis was able to score for the Catalans five minutes into the second half, Osasuna continued fighting and Raul Garcia made it three for Osasuna just five minutes later.
Guardiola then decided to bring off Pique and in his place came Cesc Fabregas. He immediately set up a goal for Tello, who took the score line to 3-2 with a 71st minute goal. However, Barcelona was unable to do enough to even get one point, despite a relentless attack. Both teams had further chances, but neither side scored.
After the this match the team travelled to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. The Leverkusen coach admitted that it would be hard to beat Barcelona, the championship holders.

El Clasico - The Best Football Match Ever

El Clásico is the name given to any football match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Some editor use the name Super Clasico as well. Another one use Super Clasico, only for competition final games between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. It is described as more than a match, because it is not only FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid. The rivalry starts as about Barcelona and Madrid are the two biggest cities in Spain, the two football clubs are two of the richest, most successful and influential football clubs, not only in Spain, but all over the world.
Apart from this, the rivalry also has political significance. Through the years Barcelona had the reputation as a symbol of Catalan pride, traditions and identity, against the centralising tendencies of Madrid. In El Clasico the whites are representing Spanish nationalism, while Barcelona representing the Catalanism. Madridists were under the protection of Franco's dictatorship. Barcelona was resentful because Franco made it illegal to speak Catalan, even arrested and executed Barcelona president Josep Sunyol(also a member of the Republican Left of Catalonia and Deputy to The Cortes) without a trial.
The first ever El Clásico was played on 13 May 1902. It was played for Copa de la Coronación, the forerunner of the Copa del Rey, but the Spanish Football Assosiation does not recognize the competition as official. Barcelona had won the game 3-1. There are 221 official Barcelona vs Real games. The whites leads with 88 wins, Barcelona 86 and 47 draws. Barcelona had score 358 goals, against 372 for Real in Clasicos.
El Clasico statistics by tournament:
  • FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid had been played 165 times in La Liga. Real Madrid win 69 of the matches. 64 wins for FC Barcelona in Primera Division and there are 32 draws
  • Spanish SuperCup - this is a championship contested by the winners of the La Liga and the Copa del Rey. 6 wins for Real, 4 for Barca and 2 draws. SuperCup Clasicos are also known as Super Clasico
  • FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid in UEFA Champions league - there is a bit advance for Real Madrid in Champions League. 3 wins for Real, 2 for Barcelona and 3 draws
  • There were 30 El Clasicos in Copa Del Rey. Catalans' Copa Del Rey wins are 14 against 10 for The King's Club and 6 draws. In 2010-2011 season was the last played Super Clasico in the tournament. Real won 1-0 after extra time

Thierry Henry, French Super Star, Signs With New York Red Bulls

Thierry Henry, used to being a superstar in European Premier and La Liga leagues (in England and Spain, respectively), will be taking the leap across the pond to try his hand as part of Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls.
MLS is actively scouting famed European players to bring more popularity to the league. They hope that the big names Americans remember from the World Cup will keep them watching soccer games through the normal soccer season.
The 32-year-old began his professional career in 1994, playing for Monaco. He joined Arsenal in 1999, where he stayed until his 2007 move to Barcelona, where he played with Argentine great Lionel Messi and Spanish stars Gerard Pique, Carles Puyon, Xavi Hernandez and David Villa.
In his International career playing for France, Henry helped his nation secure the 1998 World Cup and narrowly miss a consecutive win in 2000, losing in overtime to Italy. He was also part of the French team that won the 2000 European Championship.
It is possible that Henry is leaving Europe to get away from some of the heat built up after the infuriating France-Ireland World Cup qualifying match. France won, but just barely, and because of a hand ball Henry admitted to striking.
The move to America means a lot for the player and the league: the US hasn't had a black player as its face since Pele came from Brazil in the 1970's. And though Henry has been one of the top players in all the European Leagues for years, he has never had as large of a spotlight as he will have on him in the States.
He will be keeping the #14, his number with Barcelona. The star says of his move to New York that he intends to play hard and win another title, and he's excited to be part of the team. And as for the team? They are excited to have him!

Xavi - Breaking Records

As the soccer season is Spain goes by, Xavi Hernandez is nearing the 300 matches mark in the Primera division with FC Barcelona. The Catalan player renewed his contract, which now expires in 2014, and is looking to brake records in appearances in Blaugrana shirt.
Some believed it was unnecessary for his home club to offer him such a lengthy extension but any Barca fan will surely be pleased to see this player retire at the same place where he made his first footsteps.
Player himself spoke recently about his feat but stayed modest in his words: "A symbol of the club's history? Maybe I`ll start to think about these things when I retire. Because now, I'm just concentrated on winning more titles with the club"
First cap for Xavi came more than 10 years ago when Barca former manager, Louis van Gaal, gave him a chance vs. Mallorca when injuries of today's coach, Pep Guardiola, and Albert Celades prompted his debut. "I just thought about winning," Xavi recalls. Since then, began a brilliant career that saw him play in 299 matches and overtake the legends such as Joan Segarra and Juan Asensi
In his 10 years with FC Barcelona, Xavi won the national championship in 1999, 2005 and 2006. But the pinnacle of his career were the Champions League trophy and the European Championships title with Spain. So in a sense, the best year of his career finished only recently.
Last year, Xavi came fifth in the voting for the Golden Ball but soon will have his chance to add to his laurels. He travels Switzerland on Monday with Leo Messi as one of five finalists for the FIFA World Player. Spain`s Euro MVP, will be accompanied by his father and his bride, Elsa, and will surely take pride in the election.

Xavi Hernandez

Though christened Xavier Hernandez Creus by his parents in 1980, you'll frequently hear Xavi Hernadez referred to by his fans as well as his teammates on the La Liga Club, Barcelona, as "the X-Man". The native Spaniard is the star midfielder for Barcelona and a key player on the Spanish National Team, as well. Having reached the age of thirty, he has tallied up an impressive array of statistics and awards. Though he is not a youngster, at least not by today's standards, Xavi doesn't seem ready to retire any time soon. After all, he is still busy adding to his fame and his fortune, not to mention to the throng of fans who follow his career on and off the field with avid interest.
Under contract to La Liga's Barcelona team until 2014 after having extended his old contract during the 2008/09 Season, Xavi's new contract makes him one of Barcelona's top earning players with a salary around €7.5 million annually. He holds several team records including being second on the list for most team appearances. He overtook Calres Rexach in February of 2009 to achieve the feat and with over 450 appearances so far, is gaining ground on Migueli's record of 548.
In addition to showing up to play, he plays well. He leads La Liga in the "assists column" and during this season has been noted by many for his contributions to the Barcelona side. The press and soccer aficionados have called Xavi one of the best, if not the best, center midfielders ever. Though he had been considered a top rung player for quite some time, many are now saying he has the talent and sheer physical ability to enjoy favorable comparisons with midfield greats such as Lothar Matthaus and Michel Plantini. The Spanish press awarded gave Xavi Hernandez a nod when they named him player number three in their best of La Liga list just this month. Coming in behind players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is nothing for a footballer to be ashamed of!
In addition to his great club play, the X-Man is a regular on Team Spain's squad and has enjoyed success with them at several tournaments, most notably in the UEFA Euro 2008 when they went on to win and take home the prize for Barcelona and for his efforts was awarded the title of Player of the Tournament by UEFA officials.

Lionel Messi - The Greatest Footballer Ever?

The footballing world watched on in utter amazement and delight yesterday as Messi's Barcelona put 7 goals past a hapless Bayer Leverkusen side in a UEFA Champions League game at the Nou Camp. For the first time ever, we saw one person score 5 goals in a Champions league game and it so happened to be no other person than Lionel Messi.
Yes, the number of goals may be a new record which I think he can better in the years ahead, but it's more the manner and the sheer class with which he scored the goals that made many a football enthusiast admire this rare talent that has emerged in this generation.
Of course, we all knew about his ability already but his display yesterday has put him in another League. The way in which he made the difficult act of scoring spectacular goals look so easy was just a joy to watch. One was a left foot lob, another a delightful right foot lob, then a careful control from an acute angel, a laser-guided placement with his left foot and then a drive through a number of opposing players. His unique sense of picking the right moments in games to do what he does best is simply quite extraordinary.
He has often been compared with the Legendary Pele and his fellow country man Diego Maradona as to who is the greatest player ever but I will dare to say that even these legends will secretly admit that it's just a matter of time before this boy from the backside of Rosario, Argentina supersedes their achievements if he hasn't already done so. Considering the fact that Messi is only 24 years of age and has at least 10 years of top flight football in him, the prospect of what he could achieve can be incredible.
It's almost inconceivable that the world would never have seen what happened yesterday had it not been for the Barcelona scouts who intervened to save his career when he was being given up on. River Plate, one of the biggest clubs in the Argentine First Division who wanted to sign him from Newell Old Boys Club in Rosario, soon discovered that his inability to endure playing for 90 minutes was due to the absence of a growth hormone that hindered his normal physical development as a person. He looked so tiny for his age at the time that, they were not sure if he could develop physically to meet the demands of the modern game even though his talent was never in dispute. The money needed to put him on a special dieting programme was just too much they couldn't afford it. They gave up on him but thankfully, he was spotted and taken to Barcelona's La Masia's training academy and the rest, they say, is history.
Talking about humble beginnings, his first contract was signed on a white handkerchief because his Dad was so frustrated with the directors of Barcelona at the time due to their indecision about his son's future that, he gave Charles Rexach, the Director of football at the time a brief window of opportunity to make up his mind. Either they give him an answer there and then or forget about Messi forever once they fly back to Argentina. His exploits today has proven that it doesn't matter where you begin in life but rather, it's about you believing in your unique abilities and giftings given to you by God regardless of your size, age, race or gender.
As great as the current Barcelona team is at the moment, it is my firm conviction that if you pluck Messi out of this team, they would not have achieved as much as they have. He brings a certain quality to the team which puts them way above any other team at the moment. When games are tight, he is the only one that can come up with some special instinctive play capable of breaking down opposing teams whereby creating opportunities to score goals.
The flip side of the above argument is that, even the greatest players will find it very difficult to perform at their optimum when they are either surrounded by mediocre players or the team they find themselves in doesn't play to their strengths. This may well be the reason why he is yet to hit the same dizzy heights with the Argentine National Team as he's done time and time again with his Club side.
With all that he's achieve so far, hearing him speak just makes you believe why he may go on to accomplish much more. He seems to exude this important virtue of humility which is vital not only to help get you to the top of your game but more importantly, to stay there. There isn't any air of "superstardom" about him. His lifestyle is just simple, both on and off the pitch. I'm yet to hear any news about Messi involved in any "off the pitch" incidents that you so often associate with English Premiership players. He just seems to enjoy playing in huge stadia as much as he did when he played on the streets of Rosario.
So is he the greatest player ever? The legendary Pele seems to think he is the best by far in the world at the moment. Most football Managers, fellow professionals and the football community at large seem to think he is the best ever even though he's yet to lead Argentina to Word Cup glory. I would not dispute that either. I think we haven't seen the best of him yet. He is simply sublime

Lionel Messi Emerges FIFA World Footballer Again

Argentine national and FC Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi has once again been voted FIFA World footballer of the year for the second consecutive year following his exploits in both his club side and national team.
The mercurial attacking midfielder has been instrumental to Barca's superlative runs in both the La Liga and the UEFA Champions' league in the past 5 years. His speed, dribbling skills and brilliant passes have no doubt contributed in great measures to the success stories of FC Barcelona.
He assisted the former champions to the semi final stage of the UEFA Champions' league last season; and also played a significant role in their emergence as the La Liga champions. He also played a significant part in his country getting to the quarter final stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
This wonder kid has kept improving since he made his mark at the World Youth Championship in the Netherlands in 2005: he has not looked back ever since. Now he is beginning to rub shoulders with the great names in soccer history - Arantes De Nacimento (Pele), Zinedine Zidane, Louis Nazario DeLima (Ronaldo), Manco Van Basten, Ronaldinho, etc.
When he took the world by surprise in 2005, a lot of people had concluded that his performance then was a flash in the pan; but today he has proved all his critics wrong by adding titles upon titles to his coffers.
Winning the World Footballer award back to back is no mean feat: only few footballers have actually been able to achieve that. Messi has been able to get to this enviable level as a result of his discipline and cool-headedness. He has not allowed pride to come into him; he has not allowed his achievements to go into his head.
This is no doubt a deserved victory. That the world voted overwhelmingly for him in preference to Cristiano Ronaldo shows that his success was truly great and convincing. He proved himself in the field of play; he made an impact as a player and as a team member.
With age on his side, Lionel Messi may go ahead to surpass the records of Pele, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, Manco Van Basten, etc. He has already surpassed some of the records of these soccer greats by winning the Olympics soccer medal and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The way he is playing this season, he may just end up winning the award for the 3rd consecutive year. He has scored several goals already and provided about 15 assists in the La Liga. He has remained consistent in both the league and the Champions' league as well.
The world celebrates with you on your achievement as the current World Footballer of the year. We wish you many more years of soccer achievements. More kudos to you, Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi Secrets and Facts

South Africa World Cup 2010 is around the corner and fans from all over the world can't wait to watch current soccer stars go head-to-head during the much anticipated tournament. On June 11th 2010, South Africa the host country will kick-off the tournament against Mexico which will be the first game of group A which is composed by South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, and France. Although millions of fans are expected to watch the opening ceremony, many more are expected to be glued to the TV on June 12th which is the day Argentina will play its first game of the tournament against Nigeria. The reason for the increase in viewers is not because this is a classic, but because of Argentina's young star Lionel Messi.
At merely 22 years old, Lionel Messi has been named the best soccer player in the planet already and has won championships with his current team Barcelona FC.
Lionel Messi is a small mid-fielder with heart of a lion. He is only 5 feet 7 inches making his ball handling skills and noticeable lower body strength a sight for sore eyes for the hard-core soccer fans. His soccer skills are so impressive that has been compared to the Argentinean legend Diego Maradona. Messi moved to Europe with his family at an early age, and his soccer skills were developed by Barcelona FC. In the 2004-2005 Spanish soccer league (La Liga) Messi was the youngest player to debut in a team in La Liga and the youngest to score a goal in an official game in La Liga

Lionel Messi - Player Focus

Another off the Argentine assembly line of "New Maradonas", Lionel Messi may be the first to live up to that unfair comparison. Where Javier Saviola, Juan Roman Riquelme and Pablo Aimar have unsurprisingly failed to match HIS high standards despite initial promise, Messi has shown that even at a young age he is able to carry the weight of expectant teammates and a nation on his shoulders.
Credit must also be given to his Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard for not rushing him into a starting place at Barcelona he is more than ready to hold.
"It is clear Messi is a talent, a future player, but I ask that everyone continues supporting him when he is out of the team because he is still very young." Rijkaard said in a recent interview. He continued:
"I'm convinced about him because I know he isn't paying attention to all the speculation in the media."He prefers to do his talking on the pitch."
In fact his three goals and one assist in nine league starts for Barcelona this season to add to his goal and assist in the UEFA Champions League back up his coaches claim, and at 18 years young we are only just starting to see glimpses of his enormous potential. Messi states:
"I want to keep on learning and I hope things go well for me. The thing is to help the team as much as possible."
These are the words of a young man with a focused head on his shoulders and more importantly good advisors around him. How many times have we seen the vultures swoop in on young prodigies sweet talking them and their parents into committing career suicide by sulking and demanding more playing time only to become no more than a trivia question five years down the road.
With the World Cup in Germany swiftly approaching Lionel Messi will definitely be one to watch if selected for national duty.
Enrique Domínguez, Messi's former coach said "He could do things with the ball that defied the laws of physics. The only other person I have ever seen do that was Diego Maradona".
Let us all recall that Maradona himself did not come into his own until the 1986 World Cup in Mexico despite being tipped for great things in Spain four years prior. That World Cup was a general disappointment for Maradona as well as Argentina. Messi will be three years younger than Maradona was in his first World Cup appearance and it is important that we all allow Lionel to continue developing at his current pace without placing on him too much

Short Biography of Famous Soccer Player - Lionel Messi

His full name is Lionel Andrés Messi. Messi who was born 24 June 1987 is an Argentine soccer player and now participates for La Liga's Barcelona and the Argentine national team. Messi is regarded as one of the best and famous soccer players of his generation, by the age of 21, has received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations.
Messi started playing soccer at very early age and his latent was rapidly acclaimed by Barcelona. Making his first appearance in the 2004-2005 season, he broke the La Liga record for the youngest soccer player to take part in a league game, and the youngest to make a league goal as well.
In 2005 he became the latest teen superstar of Argentine soccer. Lionel Messi was chosen as the player of the tournament at under-20 World Cup on the year; played his first game for the Argentine national team; and made his first goal with the professional team FC Barcelona.
Messi was almost immediately being compared to an earlier hero of Argentine soccer, Diego Maradona. He was a member of Argentina's 2006 World Cup team. He assisted Barcelona win an uncommon triple in 2009: the Copa del Rey, Spain's La Liga championship, and also the Champions League.
Lionel Messi has been given countless praised from Argentinean coach Diego Maradona in spite of their defeat to Spain. Maradona stated that he was pleased with the Barcelona striker performance on the field.
On the occasion, Maradona asserted, "The match wasn't brilliant but the team responded well against the champions of Europe. It works for me because the team reacted very well. "Messi played marvelously well, and little by little he is becoming the leader of the team. It is what I want and it is what I hope for."

Lionel Messi V Cristiano Ronaldo - Who Is the Greatest?

Last night saw yet another epic El Classico where Lionel Messi and Cristano Ronaldo continued their ongoing battle for World supremacy. Barcelona and Real Madrid played out a spectacular 2-2 draw with Ronaldo and his arch nemesis Messi scoring all of the goals. These two players are taking the art of a footballer to whole new levels, but whilst there is no denying that they are the stand-out talents of their generation, and perhaps of all-time, the ongoing question is 'who of the two is the greatest?' Whilst there is no definitive correct answer to this, the widely held view over recent years has been that Messi is the King and Ronaldo the very talented Prince. However, the gap between the magical Argentinean and the Portuguese adonis appears to be closing, with some feeling that Ronaldo now deserves the crown of 'World's Best Player'.
Despite often playing just behind the main striker, Messi seems to be able to score from anywhere and everywhere. Last season, at the age of only 24, he became Barcelona's all-time leading scorer. In addition to that he also broke the 39 year old record which was set my German super striker Gerd Muller for most goals in a single European season. Amazingly, Ronaldo has managed a similar record to Messi and their overall 'goals to games' ratio since 2009 is almost identical. Despite starting his career as a winger, Ronaldo's 'eye for goal' became apparent under Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. His trademark 'dipping' free-kicks and solo goals prompted Real Madrid to break the World transfer record to bring the Old Trafford hero to the Bernabeu. Just as Messi can often be found collecting the ball in his own half, Ronaldo often drifts back in search of possession, and is also found in wide positions tormenting the opposing left and right backs. Given the fact that neither player is what is referred to as a 'goal poacher' makes their records even more unbelievable.
With regard to awards, both team based and personal, Messi is the clear winner at present. He has won the Ballon d'Or three years running (much to the obvious dismay of Ronaldo!), and his La Liga and Champions League silverware outweigh Ronaldo's.
In conclusion it is evident that both Lionel Messi and Cristano Ronaldo are head and shoulders above any other current players in World football and there are no signs of this changing any time soon. Given their relatively young ages there is every possibility that they will go down as the two greatest players in the history of the sport. For all the achievements of Pele, Maradona, Eusebio etc, there is already a case to be made that Messi and Ronaldo have matched and surpassed them all. The fact that two such players are present in the same era, playing in the same league and at almost the same ages makes the comparison slightly easier, so here goes...
Lionel Messi is currently the 'World Greatest Footballer' with Cristano Ronaldo an extremely close second. The fact that Lionel Messi has been officially awarded this title three years running with the Ballon d'Or adds weight to the argument. That along with minor points such as his superior assists record, the fact that he has consistently made more appearances than Ronaldo and that his all-round team-play is slightly better just edges it for the Argentinean genius at present. In Ronaldo's defence he is the faster / stronger physical specimen, has better heading ability and does not have a Xavi or Iniesta to link up with, but this just doesn't quite level it - for now!!!
My background is very sport and fitness orientated, not in my profession but in my lifestyle. I have been a keen sports player since I was 'knee high to a grasshopper' and a gym member since college. However, I honestly believe I have never felt fitter than I do at present, at the age of 35! I am involved in konkura.com, a social network that encourages sports training and physical exercise.

The Humility of Soccer Player Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is arguably the best soccer player in the world. He has won the B'lon Dor three times in 2009, 2010, 2011 and has played with the club FC Barcelona for years winning La Liga five times and Champions League three times while he was there.
His honors and success are substantial and have a lot to say about him as a player but today we're going to dive deeper into Messi's life to talk about his behavior open up a more intimate conversation about the young man.
He's not very outspoken, neither is he very loud or overbearing when he is interviewed. He seems more withdrawn when he's in public and he's very soft spoken. To understand why he is this way you have to go back and look at the history and his beginnings at his training ground at La Masia in Spain.
The Argentinian caught the attention of scouts at a very early age. He was a young boy then. He was recruited and sent over from Argentina leaving his family and friends behind. When he first came to La Masia to train he was described as very quiet and shy, often indicating the longing of his parents. The first few years at La Masia were very hard for him as he wasn't in the same boat as the other players because his family wasn't very close to him distance-wise. Most of the other children were from Spain but they were very supportive of him and tried their very best to cultivate and nurture the growing Argentinian.
He grew up playing soccer and it's his relaxation and also his job. Soccer is not a job to him as it is simply what he does at play. As he grew older he continues playing.
The environment at La Masia encourages humbleness. They never try to make money or fame an important aspect of life, instead they try very hard to create an environment that provides for a player to grow up well rounded. The go to school together and learn together. Part of the reason is because at La Masia you earn respect through humbleness. Academy Director Carles Folguera said, "... you can be humble if your surroundings are but it's tough." At La Masia they encourage a lot of camaraderie. Folguera also stated, "..the most important qualities for the boys is comradeship and humbleness." Seems like this has been drilled into them at La Masia as part of their player creation process.
Coming from a poor background of a father who was a steelworker and a mother who was a cleaner, the Argentinian had a lot to thank for at La Masia. His former coach Guardiola was very happy to be at La Masia at the age of 13 because they were a very organized establishment that they "helped me grow up" and had "very good food." From this you can see that there were fond memories to be had at La Masia, it's a place where you needs are taken care of and coming from a poor family you have a lot to be thankful for such as having a good place to learn, play and train and also have good food to eat. Aside from that at La Masia there is 75 staff members including doctors and trainers to help with the needs of the players as they grow older. These all inclusive associates help develop a more balanced personality that does not need to feed on fame or fortune to feel appreciated and respected as the "family" has already ascertain and taken care of all your needs. All you have to do is play.
Messi still idolizes other players. His favorite soccer player he followed as he grew up was Pablo Aimar, someone he used to watch videos of and try to mimic his skills. To this day he still idolizes this man, someone who Messi has beaten in terms of records of achievement. At the age of 23 a TV show interviewed Pablo Aimar on his thoughts of Lionel Messi and had the interview recording replayed to Lionel Messi as he watched in awe and silent joy. This shows that he's still a young person inside, someone who is very much still adhering to those feelings and emotions he had as a child.
So as you can see, La Masia never turned off the need for a person to hide their individuality and childishness. There are other things that are more important to La Masia such as respect through humbleness that bring out a different and very docile, humble and respectful person upon graduation of the program. Lionel Messi simply happens to be one of many very well rounded and nice players that graduated to play for Barcelona and other teams.

FC Barcelona: First Leg of Copa Del Rey Semifinal Ends in Draw in Valencia

After beating Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey last week, FC Barcelona's next big challenge was Valencia in the semifinal. Valencia are one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football and always a force to be reckoned with. However, Barcelona at the moment is looking a little tired and ragged, and last night Pep Guardiola had to make do without some key players due to injury, such as Andres Iniesta.
In the first half of the match the two teams looked pretty even, but Valencia seemed to create some better chances than Barcelona. Cesc Fabregas set up a shot for Alexis, but unfortunately he was unable to do anything with it. Immediately afterwards Jonas scored the first goal of the match to put the hosts in the lead.
However, Barcelona responded to this immediately and ten minutes later Alexis shot at the goal, which was deflected to give Barcelona a corner. Once again, Puyol used his head and put the ball beyond the keeper and into the back of the net to equalise for the Catalans.
When play resumed after the break Alexis seemed to have scored only to have the goal disallowed for offside. Then ten minutes into the second half, Barcelona was awarded a penalty, looking like a great opportunity for Barcelona to take the lead. However, the penalty didn't go as planned and a rather hesitant kick from Messi was easily intercepted by the Valencia goalkeeper and pushed aside.
Although Barcelona was now dominating possession they were unable to do anything with the ball despite creating a few new chances; they just weren't able to score and the match ended 1-1 going into the return leg at the Nou Camp next week. At least Barcelona have the advantage. Let's hope that they've recovered some of the energy, and can put on a more impressive display.
While they remain in the Copa del Rey and Champions League, it is looking increasingly likely that Real Madrid will take the domestic Spanish league title this season. They are currently way out in front with a seven point lead. which is going to be difficult to close at this stage of the competition. Barcelona would need to win all their remaining matches, while waiting for Madrid to slip up big time. While many criticisms may be levelled at Real Madrid

New Signings For FC Barcelona

The 2008-2009 season is barely finished but Barca is already on the move for some new signings. Calalan giants are looking to add 3 to 5 new names to their list.
Left back position
First name on the list is Bruno Saltor from Almeria. Saltor is a Spanish player and knows the league and those are the best 2 reason working in his favor. Second in line is Inter Milan fullback, Maxwell. Brazilian is highly rated by FC Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola. He is also an attacking full back, exactly what Barca needs to cover the absence of Sylvinho.
Left winger spot
With Henry turning 32 next season, Barca have set their sights on a new left winger. Illustrious names such as: Frank Ribery, David Silva, Robin Van Persie and Mauro Zarate are being mentioned as front runners for the vacant spot. First option for Pep Guardiola is Frank Ribery who currently plays for Bayern Munich and is reportedly unhappy with conditions in Bavarian capital. The Frenchman already expressed his desire to wear the Barcelona shirt but Barca now faces another problem in Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, who is also looking to sign Ribery after just completing the Kaka transfer.
New striker
Future of Samuel Eto looks uncertain. Latest reports suggest that he is likely to leave the club despite finishing an outstanding season with scoring 30 goals in the Spanish league and the winning goal in Champions league final. His most likely successors are Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Villa or Karim Benzema. All strikers have already expressed their desire to join Barcelona.

FC Barcelona Fixtures 2008-2009

With the fixture list for the Spanish league now published we are now in a position to start planning which matches to go and see. One of the top two clubs in Spain is normally considered to be FC Barcelona, and here we discuss the highlights of the fixture list for the year.
The top matches are undoubtedly the games between Barcelona and Real Madrid due to the huge rivalry between the two cities and the rejection of a centralised Spain by many Catalans. The two clubs are life long archrivals and the matches eagerly awaited. The first round clash takes place in Barcelona on December 13th or 14th, with the return match at the Santiago Bernadeu stadium in Madrid taking place on May 2nd/3rd.
One of the other great clashes is against Barcelona's second team, RCD Espanyol. This season the first leg is played at the Estadi Olimpic on the last weekend of September, with Espanyol crossing town for the Nou Camp on February 21st/22nd. While Espanyol aren't at the same level as Barcelona, they do have a hardcore fan base and the results are not a forgone conclusion by any means.
Other top matches include Barcelona versus Getafe, a hard fighting team from Madrid. Although they only gained promotion to the top division several years ago, they quickly established a reputation as a worthy rival under the management of Bernd Schuster who is now at Real Madrid. They visit the Nou Camp on November 22nd/23rd, with Barça making the return match on April 18th/19th and other matches of note include Valencia and Sevilla, both worthy opponents.

How FC Barcelona Players Contributed to Spain's Success In Euro 2012

Spain sealed their top position in Euro 2012 by defeating Italy by 4-0 in the final and creating history. Together they became a team that could be defeated by none. The exceptional match between Spain and Italy showcased outstanding skills of FC Barcelona players who were considered major contributors to their success.
Barcelona had sent 8 players to Euro 2012, and finally the number totaled to nine. Even though Carles Puyol (club captain) and David Villa (striker) missed the competition due to injury, there were still at least 7 Barca footballers that joined the Spain's squad. The Barcelona stars who contributed to the success of Spain are Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, Ibrahim Afellay, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Pedro, Victor Valdes, and Xavi.
All of the Barcelona players were given a chance to shine, with the exception of goal keeper Victor Valdes, who sadly was behind captain Iker Casillas and first reserve Pepe Reina in pecking order. However, the Catalan offered healthy support competition, as Spain achieved the crown.
Although Andres Iniesta couldn't find a place in the best player contenders for 2010 World Cup despite scoring a winning goal for Spain in the final, this midfielder was recognized as the shining star of the historic triumph of Spain in Euro 2012.
Gerard Pique also shone in the defense, with 6 assured appearances. Although there were some questions raised regarding his below-par performance, and the rift with Sergio Ramos, he dispelled all the doubts and proved to be a solid pillar for the team. In the midfield, the 23-year old Sergio Busquets showed impressive maturity in his performance despite his tender years; many football commentators predicted much more to come.
When it comes to discussing the contribution of FC Barcelona's players in Spain's success in Euro 2012, one cannot forget the contribution of Pedro, the Tenerife-born forward who was not expected to make the cut due to an injury-hit and a low-key campaign, however the two-goal display got him a secure place in the team and he played fantastically against Italy, showing what an asset he could be when match fit

Futbol Club Barcelona, also known as FC Barcelona and Barça, is a football team based in the Catalonia region of Spain. Besides being a popular and successful team, Barça has become a symbol of Catalan nationalism, inspiring the motto "Més que un club", or "more than a club".
Joan Gamper, a football enthusiast from Switzerland, founded FC Barcelona on November 29, 1899. The successful team quickly amassed a dedicated Catalan fan base.
Fans of FC Barcelona are known as culés, the Catalan word for 'ass'. This nickname originated in the twenties from Barça fans who sat in the highest row of the stadium with their culers visible to passersby.

Interesting Facts About FC Barcelona

Under Franco, the Catalan language and symbols were banned and the team was forced to change their name to Club de Fútbol Barcelona in 1939. The Catalan flag was also removed from the club shield. Despite this, the stadium remained one of the only places during Franco's regime where Catalan could be spoken and their flags could be displayed freely.
The two most successful Spanish football teams, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are also fierce competitors. The rivalry stems from Franco's dictatorship; Barça represented an opposition to Franco while Real Madrid was a symbol of nationalism and was favored by the regime and Franco.
With Franco in attendance, the club beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Copa del Generalísmo final in 1968. The club's coach at the time, Salvador Artigas, was a Republican pilot during the Spanish Civil War.
Barça's stadium, Camp Nou, was built in 1957. With a capacity of 98,000, Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe and the third largest stadium in the world.
In 1974, the club changed their name back to Futbol Club Barcelona.
Since it was founded, Barça has refused to advertise corporate sponsors on their uniforms. However, on July 14th, 2006, the club announced an agreement with UNICEF that included, for the first time in Barça's history, the organization's logo on their shirts. As part of the five year agreement, the club donates EUR1.5 million a year to UNICEF.
Club president Joan Laporta, a self-proclaimed nationalist, requires all foreign Barça players to learn Catalan.
In 2007, Laporta dedicated a portion of the ticket sales from the FC Barcelona vs. Real Madrid match to Federació Llull, an organization that promotes the spread of the Catalan language. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Prime Minister of Spain since 2004, supports FC Barcelona.

Lionel Messi: A Biography - A Genius of Soccer

From Carlos Gardel and Eva Peron to Maradona and Lionel Messi
"He (Lionel Messi) is the best player in the world by some distance", Arsne Wenger, the coach of the F.C. Arsenal, has proclaimed of the five-foot-eight-inch tall, Argentine-born football star, "He's (like) a PlayStation. He can take advantage of every mistake we make".
As elsewhere in Latin America, much of Argentina's sporting history has been dominated by football --- known simply as soccer in the States-- since the 1920s. After Argentina's military strongman Jorge Rafael Videla Redondo, a hated tyrant, declared top priority to win the FIFA Global Cup in the late 1970s, the nation's footballers invaded the world with a host of global awards and trophies. On June 25, 1978, Mario Kempes and his fellow players lifted the winner's Cup on home soil upon scoring an overwhelming win against a Peruvian team led by an Argentine-born goalkeeper (6-0) in the semis. Within a year, in Japan's capital city of Tokyo, the South American contingent, spearheaded by Diego Armando Maradona, was regarded as the best junior team on the Planet at the expense of the former Soviet Union/USSR. Shortly thereafter, Argentina was one of the "huge favorites" in the men's football tournament prior to joining the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games. Three years on, its national side came close to winning the IV Junior Global Championship.
On June 29, 1986, Los Celestes, as the national squad is known around the globe, placed first in the FIFA Cup in the United Mexican States; One of the most memorable matches ever seen in World Cup history was played there as Argentina beat England--Maradona and his team-mates tried to win on the field what their countrymen had lost in the 1982 Anglo-Argentine Falklands War. Already, in 1990, once again Maradona put Argentina in the final of the FIFA Cup on Italian soil. In the space of six years, from 1995 through 2005, the national contingent was four-time winner of the Under-20 World tournament. It was around this time that name Messi appeared on the scene.
Argentine-born Messi, who is dubbed " the Flea", is a strong and powerful forward who plays both in FC Barcelona (since 2003) and Argentina's national squad (2006).Curiously, he has spent his entire career in Spanish club (nearly 10 years), working in a variety of teams (Under-15, U-17, U-19, as well as other squads). Messi has become almost indispensable to his club (known popularly as "Barca")-he is the backbone of Barcelona's 4-3-3 formation. Nevertheless, he loves to play football with the Argentine side, having refused to be a member of the Spanish national team despite his strong links to European nation. As well as being an Argentine-born person, Messi, of Italian background, is a Spaniard citizen since the mid-2000s. From 2005 through 2011, Messi collected over seventy individual awards. Indeed, his success as a sportsman is largely due to his persistence and hard discipline. According to Paris-based magazine France Football, Messi is the world's top paid footballer. Besides all that, the center forward ---a soccer gold medalist in the 2008 Olympics-- has gained international stature as a champion for the rights of children.
Although Lionel Andres Messi, known occasionally as "the ghost center forward",is considered one of the greatest soccer players to have never won a FIFA World Cup (together with Ferenc Puskas from Hungary and Liberia's George Weah), he is already one of the male athletes most famous on the global sporting map. In the Western Hemisphere, Messi, who is often compared to Maradona, has inspired thousands of young would-be footballers to follow their dreams, especially in poverty-stricken regions. But not only that, because of him more people know about Argentina --which has a long-standing history of man-made disasters--- than ever before. On his home soil, his status is only comparable to three national celebrities: Argentina's postwar First Lady Eva Perón -made famous by Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Evita--- Maradona, and Carlos Gardel, nicknamed the "songbird of Buenos Aires" and who helped popularize tango around the world.
Lionel Messi: A Rough Diamond
Lionel Messi's life changed forever when he was plucked out of the Spanish-speaking republic of Argentina by a talent scout to play for Barca, which is often referred to as one of the top clubs around the globe- it holds hundreds of millions of soccer fans outside its own borders, from Bangladesh and Guinea-Bissau to San Marino and the Feroe islands.
You cannot become a top sportsman (woman) if you don't achieve notable results, if you are not a hard worker, and before all, if you are not able to overcome the obstacles in your life. In fact, Lionel Messi knows firsthand about this. Like his fellow Argentine Maradona, Messi is small -who stands 5 feet 8 inches tallfor the position of forward, but he overcame this with a prodigious ability and exceptional intelligence on the filed, earning the nickname "Flea". Over his athletic career, he also has defeated other hurdles: numerous injuries, especially during Rikjaard's direction. Throughout his years as a boy, his country underwent one of the deepest recessions in the Americas. But this wasn't all. Because of an illness, he almost gave up the sport. By 2008, there were troubles to send Messi to the Summer Games due to his dual citizenship and status as a professional footballer in Barcelona. Against club wishes, however, Messi, the greatest professional footballer of all time, arrived at Beijing with the Argentine squad (as a defending champion). In the Olympic arena, soon afterwards, he and his colleagues were champions, making history in the People's Republic of China. Currently, Barcelona won't sell Messi for anything in the world.
Messi bases his success on being able to offer a play based on passion, determination, hard discipline, and an exceptional ability. No player can ever be categorized as invincible in football world, but Messi is probably the most talented man ever to carry a ball. In all his matches, Messi plays as if were a game for the FIFA World Championship.
Rosario: The Birth Of A Footballer
Born in the Argentinian city of Rosario (Santa Fe Province), on June 24 1987 - a year after his country captured the FIFA World Tournament in the Mexican metropolis--- Messi is one of the fourth children born to Jorge Horacio Messi and his wife, the former Celia Mara Cucittini. Curiously, he is one of the four most prominent individuals from Rosario, alongside Libertad Lamarque (performer), Valeria Mazza (supermodel),and César Luis Menotti (football coach).
His father had been a factory steel worker. In fact, Messi inherited his football genes from his father, who was coach during a brief period. Meanwhile, Messi's mother is an admirer of notable people and wanted his children to have famous names. Celia Mara named his son Lionel after her favorite idol Lionel Richie, a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter whose pop chart-topping hits in the 1980s included "Truly", "You Are", and "All Night Long".
Like most of Argentina's sportsmen as Octavio Dazzan (cycling), David Nalbandian (tennis), and Manu Ginibili (basketball), Lionel reflects the Italian roots of his motherland. His father's family is from Italy's city of Ancona who came to the Latin American place during a large-scale European immigration at the turn of the 19th century. This Spanish-trained professional footballer, the high-scoring forward of Barcelona, has two brothers, Rodrigo and Matas, and a sister, Maria Sol. On the other hand, his cousins Maximiliano and Emmanuel Biancucchi are also soccer players.
His sporting life goes back to times when Messi grew up playing football in Rosario, a land famous for their athletic passion and hosted the World Championships for both professional and amateurs, including the Men's Football World Cup (1978) and Men's Volleyball Global Tournament (1982);Messi can take credit for that because he has been named official Ambassador for Rosario's 2019 Pan American bid. Under this Olympic atmosphere, Jorge Horacio Messi made no secret of his ambitions for his son.
Like several Latino champs --among them Edwin Vásquez Cam (shooting) and Nancy López (golf) -- Messi was introduced to sport by his father. Before joining the Newell's Old Boy's youth side, Lionel -when he was only 5 years old--- played in the local team of Grandioli, where his father was coach. On that occasion, the smaller Lionel was a goalie on the football team. At the time, he had a lot of athletic skills, but not the technical skills. Shortly after, while Lionel demonstrated his talent in the under-10 competitions in his homeland and abroad in the middle of the 1990s, the Argentine boy, at the age of 11, was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. Since then, prior to begin an athletic career as a junior player in the following years, he had to beat back an illness, whose treatment cost $ 900 a month. But in spite of this problem, his enthusiasm for football was unbelievable.
A Golden Opportunity
Recognizing Messi's precocious talent, Carles Rexach, a sports administrator, promised him that FC Barcelona would pay his treatment if he decideto play for the famous club. The answer was "yes", of course. As a consequence of this, Messi and his parents moved permanently to Barcelonese soil, a football-mad place. On that occasion, the youngster was sad to leave his home city. However, the Spaniard place had a special significance to Messi: There, on May 3, 1980, his fellow Argentine Maradona signed a six-year contract with the traditional side.
The travel proved to be a turning point in his life. In the capital and largest city of Spain's Catalan region --- one of Europe's first class cities--- Messi received a scholarship to play football in Barca's athletic academy, alongside Xabi Alonso, Gerard Piqu, Andrs Iniesta and other boys. The Club's Youth Academy (one of Western Europe's major sports academies), was set up with one primary goal in mind: Scans up to 300 young talents and transform some of them into champions. The youth squads have always preoccupied Barcelona's sports leaders. In recent decades, the Spaniard club sent scouts to Latin America looking for promising youth athletes.
As well as being the nation's second largest city behind Madrid, Barcelona is a place that is tied closely to the Olympic Movement, physical activity and all of the values that sport represent in the 21st Century. This corner of the planet, host to the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, is an international grandstand with recreational spaces, sports academies, and state-of-the-art Olympian facilities on a par with other sporting cities such as London (UK), Singapore City, Doha (Qatar), Montreal (Canada), Dubai ( United Arab Emirates), and Los Angeles (CA). Additionally, it was home of Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, former Chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and among the world's most gifted and influential sports administrators.
During a breakout year, after overcoming his illness, Messi, who was about four-foot-seven-inch tall, become one of Barca's top male players in the Boys' Division of the Spanish Football Championships. There, he had been outstanding throughout the event, scoring over 35 goals and setting numerous records for his age group. A couple of years later, under the aegis of Spain's Club, Messi improved rapidly his play and was promoted to the junior team's starting lineup, competing in the under-19 tournaments.
Encouraged by Frank Rijkaard
As a young teen, he got the first opportunity to used his talent as a member of Barca's official contingent when he made his first appearance in the friendly against Porto on November 16, 2003. Following his initial impact, scoring 22 goals in the junior competitions, the up-and-coming Messi, by late 2003, was moved up to the reserves of the club: The squad "C", prior to winning the right to play for Barcelona B side, a second division club. Messi, as a young athlete, acquired enough expertise to participate in senior soccer events, face-to-face with finest professional players from Europe and abroad. It was an excellent school for him, of course.
After watching his athletic performance in the traditional junior contests on Spaniard soil, Frank Rijkaard, Barca's major coach at the time, put his eyes on Messi --perhaps his most famous pupil--and did not doubt that he would be the next greatest footballer on the Planet ---Perhaps a Maradona. Nonetheless, the high-flying coach was not the first to be excited by the potential of Messi. On the other hand, Rijkaard backed up a number of young players, including Carles Puyol and Vctor Valds.
At the age of 17, Messi had a chance to show his athletic potential. Fortunately,he did not disappoint to Barca's sports officials and soccer fans when he entered the highest level in Spanish championship, by passing many senior footballers and becoming the youngest player in the domestic soccer league. It was one of the greatest moments of Messi's life on the soccer field.
Encouraged by his coach, Frank Rijkaard, Messi, months later, made his mark with the club by scoring his first senior goal against Albacete Balompi, becoming the youngest footballer from Barcelona to ever score in the domestic football league, among the world's most competitive sports tournaments. By any standards it is a phenomenal achievement. In fact, Rijkaard made him the focus of the team's new offfensive scheme. Later on, Messi spoke with gratitude about Rijkaard, "I will never forget the fact that he launched my career, that he had confidence in me while I was only sixteen or seventeen". Without a doubt, he was considered one of the great prospects of the world football.
A Champion In the Netherlands
By the mid-2000s,Messi brought home his country's fifth junior global title, considered a huge success in the South American republic; It was a history-making day for the Argentinean Football Association (AFA). Messi began his work with his homeland when Argentina's sports officials called on him to join the 2005 junior World Cup team. Always a heavy favorite with the Dutch fans, the national side, sparked by Messi, came first in the global contest in front of the Amsterdam (Netherlands' capital) crowd, an international sporting platform to numerous unknown footballers. Thereupon, Messi collected two special awards in Holland: The Golden Ball and the Golden Shoe.
Futbol Club Barcelona: 2005- 2006 Season
The breakthrough season for the team and Messi came in 2005-06. Three of Barcelona's Spanish titles can be attributed to Messi: Domestic League, Cataluña Cup, and Spanish Supercup--- beginning a new period of success for Spain's most popular club and topping the TV sports rankings in the European nation. On that occasion, Messi also amassed three individual trophies.
On September 27, 2005,before a crowd of several fans and spectators at Barcelona's Nou Camp Stadium (among the world's major football stadia), star youngster Messi made his debut as a local player in the European League Championship (against Italy's Udinese). He competed with Barca until his injury, six months later. In spite of playing without Messi, however, the club earned the famous Champions League, one of the four big international events on Earth, along with the Olympic Games (Winter and Summer), and the FIFA World Cup.
In the same year, the prolific scorer Messi was named as Europe's best young player by Tuttosport (a magazine from Italy), gaining the Golden Boy Trophy, by passing several sportsmen such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
Curiously, Spain is home of one of the world's largest populations of foreign-born athletes(along with France, Canada and the oil-rich Kingdom of Qatar) such as Eulogio Martínez (Paraguay, football), Nina Zhivanevskaya (Russia, swimming), Juan Domingo de la Cruz (Argentina, basketball), Glory Alozie (athletics, Nigeria), and Juan Pérez (Cuba, waterpolo). By the end of 2005, Messi was one of the last athletes to become a Spanish citizen (dual citizenship), making him eligible to play as a Spanish player in the National League.
FIFA 2006 World Cup
Historically, Argentina has the honor of being the third Third World country to capture the global contest after Uruguay (1930 & 1950) and Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002). Due to this tradition and thanks to its world-beating players on European soil, the Argentine football squad had become one of the top favorites to gain the 2006 FIFA Cup, but they finished sixth overall (ahead of three Europeans squads: England, Ukraine and Spain), after losing to host Germany in the quarterfinals. Immediately, Argentina's soccer fans blamed José Pekerman, national coach, for the defeat against Germany. Why? Incredibly, Messi was excluded to play that game.
Certainly, Messi had dissapointed 2006. Although, he made his long-awaited debut in the World Cup as he led Argentina -two-time winner of the men's football World Cup (1978 & 1986)-- to win its first points following a triumph over Serbia-Montenegro (former Yugoslavia). In Germany, he played three of Argentina's five football matches.
During the 2006 World Cup, Messi became Argentina's most youngest footballer to attend the FIFA Cup. The following year,Messi and his fellow Argentine players finished as runner-ups to Brazil in the 2007 America's Cup on Venezuelan soil.
Spain's 'Football War'
Throghout his 2006-07 season, Messi had become a regular player in his European squad, competing on equal terms with senior players and attracting huge numbers of interested fans. It was truly an inspiring moment. However, he withdrew from the Spaniard Football League due to an injury (a game against Real Zaragosa).
With better health and upon spending three months on South American soil, Messi went back to Spain, playing in the match between Barcelona and Racing de Santander. Soon after, he made a hat-trick when his club drawn 3-3 with Real Madrid, a match between the two most popular teams in Spain (better known as "The Clasico"). Since decades ago, these matches have been labelled the "Spain's Football War", attracting the largest average audience in the European country and numerous regions around the world, especially in soccer nations. In fact, it is a battle which is being won by Barca's team in recent years.
Messi's Hand of God Goal
As he entered his 20s, by 2007, he picked up a total of 14 individual trophies inside and outside Spain, a new personal record over his professional career. But this wasn't all. Evoking the style of Argentina's former star Maradona, Messi, was dubbed "Messidona" in the course of an impressive career as a sportsman.
During a never-to-be-forgotten game, on April 18, 2007, the Barcelonese club got two goals from Messi to defeat Getafe CF in the semis of the Copa del Rey; one goal inspired comparisons to Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God 'goal against England's squad at the 1986 Mexico City World Tournament --- it appeared that Messi may have knocked the ball into the net with his fist. In fact, this was great news both for Barcelona and the whole country. Nobody could imagine this feat. His fellow player Deco said, "It was the best goal I have ever seen in my life".
2007-2008 Campaign
Over the course of the season,Messi was in the spotlight as he was regarded as the world's top footballer by experts, sportswriters, coaches, players, and sports administrators. Meanwhile, Messi was elected as one of the 14th Best Male Athletes in 2007 by a total of 422 AIPS (International Sports Press Association) members from 94 countries--ahead of South Africa's rugby star Bryan Habana and Rafael Nadal, a tennis player from Spain.
After making a record in soccer world ---scored five goals over a span of seven days-- Messi helped Barcelona to become one of the four leaders in the first class Spaniard championship. He was the answer to their lack of versatility in attacking positions. In fact, he sees Barcelona through the eyes of a lover. Additionally, he scored also two goals in the UEFA Champions League. In beginning 2008, Messi celebrated his 100th match.
In March, the star athlete was forced to drop out of the Champions League because of an injury. Following over a month, he returned to the line-up, competing with Cristiano Ronaldo, considered among the globe's finest footballers. Under Messi's guidance, however, the Barcelonese club was eliminated from the European championship, showing the effects of his injury. Certainly, Messi had not a strong performance in this season, winning only two unofficial events (Beckenbauer Cup in Germany and Joan Gamper Trophy). In July of that year, on the other hand, Messi was appointed as the captain for the first time in a friendly match against Scotland's Dundee United.
Subsequently, the Barcelonese soccer club paid tribute to Messi's perseverance: Wearing the shirt number ten for the first time (historically given to the leading scorer), the number worn by former stars such as Romario Souza of Brazil, Hugo Sotil of Peru and Maradona, Messi began a new period in Barca, few weeks prior to 2008 the Summer Games.
Messi At the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Argentina earned its first soccer medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Games, after falling to Uruguay's side in the gold-medal match. Then, the national contingent was asked to replace Uruguay in the 1976 Montreal Games, but it did not accept.
During the Centennial Games in the States, on August 3, 1996, the Argentine team was runner-up to Nigeria (sub-Saharan Africa)-matched its performance in the 1920s. In the 26th Olympiad, the silver medalists were Roberto Ayala, José Chamot, Javier Zanetti, Roberto Sensini and Diego Pablo Simeone, Ariel Ortega, Hernan Crespo, and Claudio López, among others footballers. Over the next years, by 2004, the Spanish-speaking republic placed first in the Athens XXVIII Summer Games upon their victory over Paraguay, a feat never before accomplished by a male squad from Argentina in the men's soccer Olympic Cup.
Messi was Latin America's top hope for a medal in the 2008 Olympiad. Nonetheless, there were troubles to send Messi to Beijing: his club did not approve his Olympic participation. After a long-running conflict between the Spaniard club and AFA (Argentinean Football Association), Messi was eligible to represent his nation in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won his second major global event following a convincing triumph over Nigeria, one of the most extraordinary results in the history of the Olympic Championship. It was interesting to note that Messi was a great Olympian champ in the People's Republic of China (PRC).
Unlike Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) -a long-standing senior player from Brazil-- and Maradona, Messi has won an Olympic gold medal after Argentina defeated six countries in the men's Olympian football championship in the Games of 29th Olympiad in mainland China, becoming the first world-class soccer player to win a trophy in the Modern Olympics since the early 1950s when Ferenc Puskas took the Hungarian team to its first Olympian title in the Finland Summer Games.
The Soccer Tournment included some strong names such as Brazil, Belgium, Holland, and Cote d'Ivoire. There, this Spanish-trained professional player also helped Argentina to win their second straight Olympic title; the nation's fourth Olympian medal in men's football. As well as earning the gold in the People's Republic, Messi was regarded as one of Latin America's foremost Olympic athletes. Nonetheless, his trophy was overshadowed by the wins of Michael Phelps, Usain Powell of Jamaica ( 3-time Olympic gold medalist ) and other champions.
2008-2009 Season
After being part of the Olympic gold-winning squad in 2008, Messi won the world's best footballer by FIFA ( the world's governing body of soccer ).
In beginning 2009, Barcelona's 2-1 win over Racing de Santander was one of Messi's most notable matches, scoring both goals in the last 45 minutes. Messi entered the match when its club was defeated (0-1), but he confirmed his international status when he was able to break down a Santander defense. During the game, Spain's team made its 5,000 goal with Messi.
After making worldwide headlines on Spaniard soil, he was a key player when his club had a convincing 6-2 win over Real Madrid at Santiago de Bernabu Stadium in Spain's capital city--- Without a doubt, one of the greatest games of Messi's athletic career. As has traditionally been the case, this a match attracted several neutral fans across the globe. Messi's other important achievement was when Barcelona's side finished first in the unofficial event Joan Gamper Trophy for the third time in a row. In 2008, he came away with 10 individual awards.
His Play Speaks For Itself
By the time the 2009-10 season, Messi brought about a sporting revolution at Barcelona. Astonishingly, his side won all the championships. For these wins, some experts and sportswriters believe he is better than Maradona and Pele.
Upon claiming five prestigious competitions ---the Champions League, the UEFA Supercup, the Spanish Cup (Copa del Rey), the National League, and the Spanish Supercup--- Messi was able to lead Barcelona side to victory in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the turn of the 2009, becoming Spain's most popular person and making Barcelona one of the world's most successful clubs in football history. Apart from winning these events, he collected over 15 individual awards in the Americas, Persian Gulf, and Western Europe: World Football of the Year, Alfredo Di Stefano Trophy, World Selection, Best Player in the Club World Cup, and Champions Trophy, among other trophies.
In April 2010, one of the most interesting statistics came from Messi when he became Barcelona's first footballer to score four goals in the Champions League-all against Arsenal F.C. Likewise, he made a name for himself in soccer world as he was Barcelona's top scorer in the Champions League ( twenty-five goals). Later on, Messi helped the club to capture the Spanish league, as well as winning two special trophies as the Best Player.
Spain: The Best Domestic Football
Not all of Messi's play was acclaimed in 2010. Despite the optimism following Messi's strong performance in Western Europe, Argentine side was eliminated by Germany (0-4), allowing it to secure a top five position in the FIFA Global Tournament;one of Messi's most disapponting results in this period.
The men's football team of Argentina departed for Africa in the quest of their third Global Cup. From the beginning, Los Celestes entered the 2010 South Africa World Cup as a front-runner to win the title. Prior to being eliminated in the quaterfinals, the South American nation had four wins: Nigeria (1-0), South Korea (4-1), Greece (2-0), and Mexico (3-1). Ironically, the Spanish national team won the Global Cup for the first time.
Although one of the most prominent sportsmen in this Century, Messi has not won a World Cup (2006 & 2010). In sub-Saharan Africa, his production was poor: He did not score a single goal. Up to now, his results pale in comparison with Maradona and Pele.
2010-2011 Season
In September 2010, Messi's play captivated the audience, from experts and sportswriters to fans, setting new Spanish and European records. For the third consecutive time, the star player became top scorer in the Champions League. It was unbelievable. In the whole event, the sport's greatest footballer was a "perfect machinery". Spearheaded by its idol Messi, the Barcelonese club amassed two tournaments - The national tournament and then Champions League for the second successive year, sparking off celebrations in the Spaniard city of Barcelona. In the meantime, he gained the FIFA Ballon d' Or. These wins have helped construct an excellent relationship between Messi and his fans inside and outside Spain. In his native country, however, there is another atmosphere.
America's Cup
Argentina's side was upset by Brazil in the finals of the 2007 South American Cup (there Messi appeared in all six of his nation's games). Four years later, the traditional event was held in Argentina. There, the host nation entered the regional contest, but it did not even make the semis. On the eve of that event, Argentina was a gold-medal contender well ahead of Brazil and Uruguay.
Unfortunately, Messi could not do anything. In spite of his extraordinary achievements in Western Europe, the amazing Latino player was unable to lead the Argentine side to win the Copa America for the second time, being strongly criticized by Argentina's football fans.
The local squad had two draws with Bolivia (1-1) and Colombia (0-0) before defeating Costa Rica (3-0) and falling to eventual champion Uruguay (4-5) in the quarter-finals. In his own land,Messi did not score a single goal (except on a penalty) over the course of the Latin American championship. Undeterred, he departed for Spain.
Undoubtedly, some soccer fans don't understand why Argentina's national team can not win international tournaments with the world's most prominent soccer player.
2011-2012 Season
Spearheaded by Messi, the Barcelonese club captured the Spanish Supercup on in August 2011. With 8 goals, Messi was the top scorer in the national contest, ahead of Raúl González Blanco. Within a few weeks, they also won the European Supercup. On December 18, 2011, Barcelona won the Club World Cup by beating Brazil's Santos (4-0). There, Messi was the tournament's most valuable athlete. Astonishingly, Messi became the top scorer (236 goals) in Barca's history on March 31, 2012.
An Advocate for the Rights of Children
Latin America's remarkable football player Messi is regarded as Argentina's long-standing advocate for the rights of poor children. By 2007, he created a self-named foundation, whose principal aim is to improve education and health care of the future generation of Argentina's boys and girls. Recently named UN Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Messi works closely with the international organization, increasing global awareness and providing financial aid to programs for children and mothers on Earth.
